¶ 01 · The stops, in order

Where this route actually goes.

Each stop earns its nights. The quiz decides how long you stay in each, and whether a stop drops off entirely because it is not you.

Stop 01 · about 2 nights

Negombo

Stop 02 · about 2 nights

Sigiriya

Stop 03 · about 2 nights

Kandy

A lake-centred hill city built around the gold-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, backed by the ridged green wall of the Knuckles range.

Good for · temples, festivals, hiking, cool air
Stop 04 · about 2 nights

Nuwara Eliya

Stop 05 · about 2 nights

Ella

Stop 06 · about 1 night

Scrub, lagoons and low rock outcrops running down to an empty coast, with the densest leopard population in the country in the dry months.

Stop 08 · about 1 night

Galle

¶ 02 · Along the way

Picks that sit on this route.

From the Sri Lanka file. Real places, filed by people who went, not scraped from a Top 10 list.

Do · Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya

Climb Sigiriya before the heat

A fifth century rock citadel on a 200 metre granite outcrop, with frescoed galleries, a mirror wall and the lion's paw stairway to the summit palace. The single most visited paid site in the country, which is the argument for going at opening.

Do · Central hills, Kandy

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Kandy's lakeside temple holds the Buddha's tooth relic and is the ritual centre of the country. In 2026 the Esala Perahera runs 18 to 28 August, with the grand Randoli procession on 27 August and the water cutting ceremony at 01:28 the same night.

Do · Tea country, Ambewela to Ella

Ride the hill country train

Blue trains climbing through tea terraces, eucalyptus and cloud, with rear-facing observation cars on the reserved services. As of 2026 the running section is Ambewela to Badulla via Ella, not Kandy to Ella.

Do · Tea country, Nuwara Eliya

Horton Plains and World's End

A montane plateau above 2,100 metres ending in a roughly 1,200 metre vertical drop over the southern plains, on a loop walk that also passes Baker's Falls. Cloud closes the view most mornings by mid-morning.

Eat · The south, Galle to Tangalle

Ambul thiyal

Sour tuna curry preserved with goraka, a black sticky souring paste, cooked dry with no gravy at all. It started on the south coast as a way of keeping fish without refrigeration, which is exactly why it tastes the way it does.

Eat · The central hills, Kandy

Polos curry

Young green jackfruit cooked down to a pulled-meat texture, from the vegetable-heavy kitchens of the central highlands. Mature jackfruit and jackfruit seeds are cooked separately and taste nothing like it.

Eat · Sigiriya

View Sigiri Restaurant

Garden and indoor seating right by the Sigiriya entrance, local dishes alongside simpler Western options. The banana chocolate roti is what reviewers order after the climb.

Eat · Sigiriya

Cafe Gazebo

A small lakeside cafe with paddy-field and rock views. Cappuccinos, fresh lime soda, and a homemade chocolate cake reviewers specifically mention.

¶ 03 · How it becomes yours

The route is the spine. You are the trip.

Five short questions, about three minutes. The plan starts from this route and a library of Sri Lanka trips we have tested, then reshapes the nights, the food and the days to your pace and budget.

No sponsored stops, no filler days. If a place stays on your plan, it earned the spot.
