¶ 01 · The stops, in order

Where this route actually goes.

Each stop earns its nights. The nights below are the ones this route actually runs, not an average.

Stop 01 · about 3 nights

Bangkok

Where nearly every trip begins. River, street food, temples, and rooftops that go all night.

Good for · first landing, food, energy
Stop 02 · about 2 nights

Koh Tao

Stop 03 · about 2 nights

Koh Phangan

¶ 02 · Day by day

The whole route, already written.

Every day below is authored, not generated. If something does not suit you, say so when you book and we change it before anything is confirmed.

Day 01

Land, eat one plate, sleep

Bangkok

Someone meets you at the airport and gets you to the room. Nothing is scheduled after that, because the flight in is long and the first evening in Bangkok is better spent badly than efficiently. If you surface at seven in the evening, the street kitchens near wherever you are staying will still be running.

Morning
Arrival and airport transfer, whenever your flight gets in.
Afternoon
Free. Sleep it off, or walk one block and come back.
Evening
Pad kra pao from a street stall, minced pork with holy basil over rice and a fried egg on top. Ask for it phet maak if you want the real heat. If the menu has photos and the chairs are plastic, you are in the right place.
Stay · A small hotel on the river side of the city, walking distance to a Skytrain station.Meals · None
Day 02

Wat Pho, the Grand Palace, and Chinatown after dark

Bangkok

The full Rattanakosin temple circuit in one day, with a guide who knows the history rather than the plaques. It is a lot of walking on marble in the heat, so it starts early and finishes before the worst of the afternoon. The evening is the best meal of the week and it costs almost nothing.

Morning
Wat Pho first, before the coach groups arrive: the 46 metre reclining Buddha, the feet in mother of pearl, and the traditional massage school in the same compound if your shoulders are still airborne.
Afternoon
The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew for the Emerald Buddha, then the cross river ferry to Wat Arun. Knees and shoulders covered at all three, and they do enforce it at the gate.
Evening
Yaowarat Road at five, when Chinatown starts waking up. Roast duck over rice at a standing counter, skin crackling, broth on the side. No ambience whatsoever.
Stay · The same small hotel on the river side of the city.Meals · Breakfast
Day 03

Longtail through the klongs, then your own afternoon

Bangkok

A morning on the water and then the rest of the day is unbooked on purpose. Bangkok rewards an afternoon you did not plan more than most cities do. The evening gives you two options and neither is wrong.

Morning
Private longtail into the Thonburi canal network: wooden houses on stilts, small temples off the main channel, and a version of Bangkok that has not changed much in sixty years.
Afternoon
Yours. Ari is the easy answer: Rocket Coffeebar on Soi Ari 4, good espresso, hard air conditioning, a window seat if you are in before ten. If you are here between March and June, the mango sticky rice from the cart vendor near Or Tor Kor market is worth the trip across town on its own.
Evening
Pick one. Professional Muay Thai at Rajadamnern, with Thai crowds betting ringside and a pre fight ritual that is worth the ticket by itself, from about THB 2,000 and optional. Or the Charoenkrung bars: Teens of Thailand for gin, Tropic City for Thai spirits, both easy to sit at alone.
Stay · The same small hotel on the river side of the city.Meals · Breakfast
Day 04

South by air, then two hours across open water

Koh Tao

Early start and a long transit day, but it beats the overnight bus by a distance. Bangkok to Chumphon is a short hop by air, then a van to the pier. Only two catamarans a day cross to Koh Tao, at seven in the morning and half past one, and this route is built around the later one so you are not leaving Bangkok at four.

Morning
Transfer to the airport and the flight down to Chumphon.
Afternoon
Van to the pier, then roughly two hours on the catamaran to Mae Haad. Sit inside if the sea is up.
Evening
Drop the bags and walk to Sairee. If you land early enough, 995 near Mae Haad pier does duck over rice, though it is usually gone by mid afternoon.
Stay · A simple bungalow set back from Sairee beach, a few minutes from the dive schools.Meals · Breakfast
Day 05

In the water at Koh Tao

Koh Tao

Koh Tao is one of the cheapest places on earth to get certified, in water that is warm and usually clear, and the whole island is built around that one fact. If you want the open water course, the theory sits the evening you arrive and the water days are this one and the next, roughly THB 9,000 to 12,000 paid straight to the school. If you do not dive, the same boats take snorkellers and the day works either way.

Morning
Out to the sheltered sites off the north and west, Japanese Gardens or Shark Bay depending on what the sea is doing.
Afternoon
Second dive, or a long swim and a slow walk back down Sairee.
Evening
Sunset from the north end of the beach, then dinner wherever you end up. Ask the dive school for the small operators over the mega ones, and ask what their maximum class size is before you book anything.
Stay · The same bungalow near Sairee beach.Meals · Breakfast
Day 06

A second day underwater, or none at all

Koh Tao

Certification finishes today if you started it. If you did not, this is a soft day on an island that is small enough to cross on a scooter in twenty minutes and rough enough on its back roads that plenty of people do not.

Morning
Final dives, or the climb to the John Suwan viewpoint at the southern end while it is still cool.
Afternoon
Free. Tanote Bay on the east side is the quiet swim, with almost nobody on it midweek.
Evening
Free. Sairee at dusk is loud at the south end and empty at the north end, and you get to choose which.
Stay · The same bungalow near Sairee beach.Meals · Breakfast
Day 07

One hour down the chain to Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan

The shortest move of the trip. Mae Haad to Thong Sala is about an hour on the fast catamaran, which leaves most of the day intact on the other side. Koh Phangan has two personalities and this route goes to the quiet one.

Morning
Check out and the catamaran across to Thong Sala.
Afternoon
Settle on the west coast. Sri Thanu is the calm half of the island: yoga shalas, vegan kitchens, and the Zen Beach sunset that people genuinely turn up for.
Evening
Thong Sala night market. Grilled everything, khao soi, roti, smoothie stands, dinner for a couple of hundred baht.
Stay · A beach bungalow on the west coast near Sri Thanu, a short ride from the pier.Meals · Breakfast
Day 08

Nothing on the sheet

Koh Phangan

One full day with nothing booked in it. Every plan that works has one of these, and a plan with no slack in it is a plan that breaks the first time a boat runs late. Two options are here if you want them, and neither is prearranged.

Morning
Free. A drop in class at one of the Sri Thanu shalas runs about THB 300 to 600 if you want the day to have a shape.
Afternoon
Free. The Ang Thong marine park boat is the big optional: forty two islands, the emerald lagoon, a kayak leg and a viewpoint climb, roughly THB 1,400 to 2,500. It eats the whole day, which is why it is offered rather than booked.
Evening
Sunset seafood at Fisherman's on Thong Sala beach, barbecued fish and southern curries with your feet in the sand. The low tables at the front need booking ahead; walk ins eat at the back.
Stay · The same west coast bungalow near Sri Thanu.Meals · Breakfast
Day 09

Half an hour across to Koh Samui

Koh Samui

The last hop is barely a crossing: Thong Sala to Samui takes about thirty minutes and there are boats through the day, so the morning stays yours. Samui is busier and better connected than the two islands behind it, which is exactly what you want on the night before a flight.

Morning
Free. A last swim on the west coast before you pack.
Afternoon
Ferry to Samui, then across to Bophut. Fisherman's Village is old shophouses on one street with the sea at the end of it.
Evening
Dinner at Barracuda in Bophut, chef run seafood and Mediterranean plates. The considered meal of the trip, after nine days of eating standing up.
Stay · A small place in Bophut, walkable to the Fisherman's Village strip and half an hour from the airport.Meals · Breakfast
Day 10

Out through Samui

Koh Samui, departure day

Transfer to Samui airport for your flight out. The airport is open sided and thatched and takes about fifteen minutes from Bophut, so the morning is not a rush unless your flight is.

Morning
Breakfast, then a last hour on the beach if the timings allow it.
Afternoon
Transfer to Samui airport and departure.
Stay · Checkout is usually late morning. Bags can be left at the property if your flight is later.Meals · Breakfast

¶ 03 · Book it

No form. Just a date.

Nine nights that start loud and end quiet. Bangkok gets three days of temples, canals and street food, then the trip drops onto the Gulf chain and slows down: Koh Tao for the water, Koh Phangan for the doing of nothing, Koh Samui for the last night before the flight out. It changes base four times in ten days, and two of those are boat mornings, so there is packing involved.

We come back within 48 hours with availability and your exact price. Nothing is charged until you have seen that number and said yes.

Nothing here is priced up front. Pick a start date and send the request, and you get availability and the full cost back within 48 hours. A deposit holds the dates after that.

The Gulf islands run a different rain calendar to the Andaman coast: the wettest stretch here is late October into December, and heavy seas can push a ferry by a day. The Full Moon Party lands once a month on Koh Phangan and sets the tone at Haad Rin for roughly 48 hours either side, so say whether you want to be there for it or nowhere near it when you send your dates.
