Java overland: Jakarta to Bali
12 nights, 13 days, 5 stops. The rail line down Java, two volcanoes that start in the dark, and the ferry across to Bali. No form to fill in. Pick a start date and send it over.
Where this route actually goes.
Each stop earns its nights. The nights below are the ones this route actually runs, not an average.
Yogyakarta
Mount Bromo
Ijen
Bali
Terraced rice fields, moss-covered Hindu temples and surf beaches, where ceremonies fill a crowded island.
The whole route, already written.
Every day below is authored, not generated. If something does not suit you, say so when you book and we change it before anything is confirmed.
Landing in Jakarta
Soekarno-Hatta sits an hour or more from the centre depending on what the traffic is doing, and a driver meets you at arrivals. Nothing is scheduled after that. Most people land tired, eat close to where they sleep and start properly tomorrow.
- Morning
- Arrive at Soekarno-Hatta. Private transfer into the city.
- Afternoon
- Free. Rest, get an eSIM working, change money at a licensed counter rather than a street kiosk.
- Evening
- Dinner near where you are staying.
Old Batavia, then a Padang lunch
Kota Tua, the Dutch-era quarter, is walkable in a morning: Fatahillah Square, the old post office, the canal edge. Lunch is nasi padang at Rumah Makan Surya on Bendungan Hilir, where the waiters stack every dish on your table and you are charged only for what you touch. The afternoon is left open, because tomorrow is a long day sitting still.
- Morning
- Kota Tua on foot, with the history museum if the heat gets much.
- Afternoon
- Nasi padang at Rumah Makan Surya. Do not idly pick at plates you have no intention of eating.
- Evening
- Free.
Executive class across the island
The train pulls out of Gambir and runs about seven and a half hours to Yogyakarta's Tugu station, with assigned seats, air conditioning and paddy fields under volcano cones for most of it. You arrive early evening. The angkringan carts around Malioboro are the right first meal: nasi kucing wrapped in banana leaf, skewers off the grill, ginger wedang ronde, all of it pocket change.
- Morning
- Transfer to Gambir and board.
- Afternoon
- On the train, roughly seven and a half hours end to end.
- Evening
- Into Tugu station. Angkringan stalls near Malioboro. Point, stack, settle up at the end.
Borobudur, then the spires at Prambanan
Climbing Borobudur runs on timed sessions now, around 1,200 people a day, each group with a certified guide and the soft Upanat sandals that protect the stone. Your slot is booked weeks ahead. The scarce sunrise ticket is capped at about a hundred people and is never sold at the gate, so this is an honest daytime session rather than a sunrise promise. Prambanan sits the other side of the city, quieter on the climb, and reads better in late light.
- Morning
- Timed climb session at Borobudur with the site guide.
- Afternoon
- Back through Yogyakarta, then the Shiva temples at Prambanan.
- Evening
- Free.
Gudeg for breakfast and an afternoon with nothing in it
Gudeg is a Yogyakarta breakfast rather than a dinner: young jackfruit stewed slow in coconut milk and palm sugar, with rice, chicken and krecek. Wijilan street south of the palace is where it lives and Gudeg Yu Djum is the institution on it. The kraton and the water castle at Taman Sari take the rest of the morning, and the afternoon is unstructured on purpose.
- Morning
- Gudeg on Wijilan, then the kraton and Taman Sari.
- Afternoon
- Yours. Batik workshops, the markets, or a long lie down.
- Evening
- Sate klathak at Pak Pong out in Pleret: goat grilled on iron bicycle spokes, salted and nothing else, with a gulai broth on the side. Expect a queue.
Train east, then the climb to the caldera rim
The through train to Probolinggo takes about seven hours. From the station it is another ninety minutes to two hours by road, climbing to Cemoro Lawang on the lip of the Tengger caldera, and you get in after dark. At around 2,200 metres it is properly cold at night, which catches out anyone who packed for Bali.
- Morning
- Board at Tugu for the run east.
- Afternoon
- On the train, about seven hours to Probolinggo.
- Evening
- Private car up to the rim. Late arrival, dinner where you sleep.
A slow day so tomorrow is survivable
This day exists to absorb the travel behind you and the 3am start ahead. A walk along the caldera edge is enough movement for most people, with the ash plain laid out below and the cone smoking in the middle of it. Madakaripura waterfall down in the gorge is there for anyone who wants the drive. Dinner is early and the lights go off by nine.
- Morning
- Sleep in. Rim walk along the caldera edge.
- Afternoon
- Free, or the optional run down to Madakaripura waterfall.
- Evening
- Early dinner, layers laid out, an early night. The wake call is 3am.
3am across the Sea of Sand, then five hours east
Jeeps leave in the dark and cross the ash plain to the viewpoint, where you stand in the cold with a few hundred other people and watch the light come up over a smoking cone inside a much older caldera. This is the most commodified morning in Java and it is still worth doing, as long as you go knowing it is a crowd and not a private moment. Back at the guesthouse by nine, then five to six hours by private car east to Banyuwangi.
- Morning
- 3am jeep to the viewpoint, then the Sea of Sand and the crater stairs. Back by 09:00.
- Afternoon
- Private car east through East Java, five to six hours.
- Evening
- Into Banyuwangi. Early dinner, early night.
The empty day, and it is empty for a reason
You have just done a 3am start and you are about to do a midnight one. Nothing is scheduled. Banyuwangi has a quiet coast, plantation walks, and the dry savanna at Baluran a couple of hours north if you cannot sit still. The honest recommendation is to sleep late, eat well and be horizontal by eight.
- Morning
- Free.
- Afternoon
- Free. Optional run to the coast or to Baluran's savanna.
- Evening
- Dinner early. The wake call is around 23:30.
Ijen from 1am, then the crossing into Bali
The climb from Paltuding basecamp starts around 1am and takes an hour and a half to two hours, three kilometres of steady gradient by head torch. Whether you can go down into the crater to see the sulphur gas burning blue depends entirely on that morning's gas readings, and the park closes the descent without notice when they are high, so it is never promised. What you get either way is the acid lake turning turquoise at dawn and the miners hauling loads up the same path you are struggling with empty hands. Back down mid-morning, sleep, and cross to Bali in the afternoon.
- Morning
- Start at Paltuding around 01:00. Guide, dual filter mask and the 24 hour health certificate arranged in advance. Down by 08:00 or 09:00.
- Afternoon
- Sleep, then Ketapang port. The crossing to Gilimanuk is about an hour once loading is counted.
- Evening
- Short drive up the west Bali coast. Dinner and a long night.
West coast to Ubud
About three hours by car across the width of Bali, through the western half that most people drive past on the way to somewhere else. You get in around lunchtime with the rest of the day free. The change of register after Java is abrupt: canang sari offerings on every doorstep by breakfast, and more cafes than warungs on some streets.
- Morning
- Slow start on the coast.
- Afternoon
- Private car to Ubud, roughly three hours. Free once you land.
- Evening
- Free. Naughty Nuri's for ribs is the low-effort option, and busy from six.
Terraces early, suckling pig by noon
Tegalalang is twenty minutes north and worth it before the coaches arrive, still working paddy under the subak irrigation system rather than a set built for photographs. Babi guling is a lunch dish here, not a dinner: Ibu Oka roasts a set number of pigs each morning and the better cuts are gone by early afternoon. The rest of the day is yours, with a market and kitchen cooking class as the one thing worth booking if you want the morning filled instead.
- Morning
- Tegalalang rice terraces early, before the tour coaches.
- Afternoon
- Babi guling at Ibu Oka before noon, then free.
- Evening
- Free. Locavore NXT out at Lodtunduh is the considered dinner if you booked it weeks ago.
Out of Denpasar
Ngurah Rai is about ninety minutes from Ubud, longer if you travel in the middle of the day, and the transfer is timed to your flight. If you are staying on in Bali rather than flying home, the team hands you over to your next base instead of dropping you at the airport.
- Morning
- Breakfast, then the transfer timed to your flight.
- Afternoon
- Departure.
- Accommodation for all twelve nights
- Airport pickup in Jakarta and all transfers on the route
- Executive class train, Jakarta to Yogyakarta and Yogyakarta to Probolinggo
- Private car with driver for the mountain roads, including the long East Java transfer
- Mount Bromo park entry and the shared jeep across the Sea of Sand
- Ijen park entry, a licensed guide, dual filter gas mask hire and the required health certificate
- Borobudur timed climb session with the site guide, and Prambanan entry
- The Ketapang to Gilimanuk ferry crossing and the Bali road transfers
- Breakfast daily, plus the meals listed against each day
- A local contact on the ground, reachable for the whole trip
- The written itinerary itself
- International flights, and the onward flight out of Denpasar
- Visa or e-VOA
- Travel insurance
- Bali's tourist levy, paid per person on entry to the island
- Most lunches and dinners, and all drinks
- Anything marked optional in the days, including Madakaripura waterfall and the Ubud cooking class
- Personal spending, laundry and tips
No form. Just a date.
Twelve nights running the length of Java by train and private car, from old Batavia in Jakarta to the Tengger caldera, the Ijen crater and the short crossing into Bali at the end. Two of these mornings begin between midnight and 3am, and the days on either side of them are kept deliberately empty. It moves at a real pace and covers real distance, with the slow half saved for last.
We come back within 48 hours with availability and your exact price. Nothing is charged until you have seen that number and said yes.
Nothing here is priced. Pick a date and send it, and the team comes back with availability and the exact cost before anything is committed.
Run this in the dry season, roughly May to September, when the craters are clear. Borobudur's climb tickets are timed and capped so they are booked days ahead, and the descent into Ijen's crater is closed at short notice whenever the gas readings run high.
Picks that sit on this route.
From the Indonesia file. Real places, filed by people who went, not scraped from a Top 10 list.
Gudeg Yu Djum
Young jackfruit stewed sweet in coconut milk and palm sugar, served with rice, chicken and krecek; a classic Yogyakarta breakfast.
Sate Klathak Pak Pong
Goat satay grilled on iron bicycle spokes, seasoned only with salt so the meat and smoke do the work; locals queue for it at dinner.
Angkringan stalls (Yogyakarta)
Late-night street institution offering nasi kucing, skewers and wedang ronde ginger drink; more a social hour than a full meal.
Babi Guling Pak Dobiel
Balinese spit-roasted suckling pig served with rice, crackling, lawar and pork soup; a signature feast plate popular in Nusa Dua.
