A fjord-head capital of glass and water. The Opera House roof walks straight up out of the harbour, the MUNCH tower stands next door in Bjørvika, and small ferries cross to wooded islands from the city quays.

Flåm

Norway's longest fjord, 205 km inland, narrowing to the UNESCO Nærøyfjord where cliffs close in on an electric boat. The Flåm Railway climbs from sea level to Myrdal past waterfalls and hill farms.

Bryggen and the Fløibanen funicular, Bergen

The UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf, then the funicular six minutes up Mount Fløyen, departures every 10 minutes and running 08:00 to midnight in summer. At the top are hiking trails, cafés, a restaurant open 11:00 to 23:00, and goats.

Skillingsbolle, the Bergen cinnamon bun

Bergen's cinnamon bun, brought in by the Hanseatic League in the 16th century and named after its original price of one skilling. The raisins vanished in the Second World War and never came back.

Fish Market and Mathallen, Bergen

There has been trading on this spot since the 1200s. The indoor Mathallen opened in 2012 and runs year round, Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 21:30 and Sunday 10:00 to 21:30. The outdoor stalls run from 1 May through the summer.
