¶ 01 · The stops, in order

Where this route actually goes.

Each stop earns its nights. The quiz decides how long you stay in each, and whether a stop drops off entirely because it is not you.

Stop 01 · about 2 nights

Bern

A U shaped valley with waterfalls falling off both walls, three named peaks on the skyline, and car free villages on the ledges above.

Good for · hiking, high mountains, waterfalls, car-free stays
Stop 02 · about 1 night

Affoltern im Emmental

Stop 03 · about 1 night

Fribourg

A sandstone old town inside a loop of river, arcades running for kilometres, and rolling green dairy hills behind it dotted with wooden farmhouses.

Good for · old towns, cheese, swimming, slow days
Stop 04 · about 1 night

Gruyères

Stop 05 · about 1 night

Montreux

¶ 02 · Along the way

Picks that sit on this route.

From the Switzerland file. Real places, filed by people who went, not scraped from a Top 10 list.

Do · Bernese Oberland

Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe

Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 m, reached from Grindelwald Terminal on the Eiger Express tricable gondola, fifteen minutes to Eigergletscher, then rail. About an hour and a half in total. Ice sculptures and a long view down the Aletsch Glacier at the top, and it runs every day of the year. A CHF 10 seat reservation is compulsory from 1 May to 31 October 2026.

Do · Bern

Swimming the Aare through Bern

The Aare loops right around Bern's old city and floating down it is an ordinary summer habit rather than a visitor activity. The river runs fast.

Do · On Lake Geneva, near Montreux

Château de Chillon

Switzerland's most-visited historic site, sitting directly on the shore of Lake Geneva, a 3km, 30-40 minute lakeside walk from Montreux. The walk itself doubles as a scenic solo activity; the castle is self-guided inside. Book ahead in peak season.

Do · Montreux lakefront

Freddie Mercury Statue & Quais Fleuris

A larger-than-life statue of Freddie Mercury at Place du Marché, arm raised toward the lake, on the flower-lined Quais Fleuris promenade with Alpine views across the water. Mercury lived and recorded his final album in Montreux, which gives the statue real local grounding rather than just being a photo-op.

Eat · Fribourg and Vaud

Cheese fondue, moitié-moitié

Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois melted half and half with white wine, eaten by dipping bread on a long fork. Melted cheese dishes turn up in Swiss convent records as far back as 1291, and the Fribourg and Vaud version splitting two cheeses is the standard one.

Eat · Fribourg and Gruyères

Double cream meringue

Meringue served with the thick double cream of the Gruyère district. Gruyères is the home town, a walled hill town with a castle above and a cheese dairy at Pringy below.
