¶ 02 · Along the way

Picks that sit on this route.

From the Switzerland file. Real places, filed by people who went, not scraped from a Top 10 list.

Do · Geneva lakefront

Jet d'Eau + lakeside pier walk

Geneva's iconic 140m fountain in the lake, a narrow pier lets you walk out close to the base. Spray increases in wind; illuminated at night. Quick, free, an easy solo stop at any hour.

Do · Lake Geneva and Vaud

Walking the Lavaux terraces

830 hectares of terraced vineyard over about 30 km of Lake Geneva shore, worked since the 11th century under Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries and planted mainly to Chasselas. UNESCO inscribed in 2007. The marked walk runs Saint-Saphorin to Lutry, and synthetic pesticides have been out of use since 2016.

Do · Geneva

CERN Science Gateway

Three permanent exhibitions on the quantum world, the laboratory itself and the universe, plus science shows, lab workshops and guided tours. Just outside Geneva and reachable on city transport.

Do · On Lake Geneva, near Montreux

Château de Chillon

Switzerland's most-visited historic site, sitting directly on the shore of Lake Geneva, a 3km, 30-40 minute lakeside walk from Montreux. The walk itself doubles as a scenic solo activity; the castle is self-guided inside. Book ahead in peak season.

Eat · Lake Geneva and Vaud

Papet vaudois

Leeks and potatoes stewed together and served with saucisse aux choux, the cabbage sausage. The signature plate of canton Vaud.

Eat · Fribourg and Gruyères

Double cream meringue

Meringue served with the thick double cream of the Gruyère district. Gruyères is the home town, a walled hill town with a castle above and a cheese dairy at Pringy below.
